The principle
How security film works
It does not stop the glass breaking. It stops the glass leaving the frame.
A thick, optically clear film is bonded to the inside face of the glass. On impact the pane can still crack — but the film holds the fragments together and keeps the sheet in its frame, so there is no clean hole to reach through and no shower of broken glass. An intruder expecting a single quick strike is left hammering at a window that stays shut.
Most opportunistic break-ins depend on speed and quiet. Security film removes both. It also reduces injury risk if a window is ever broken by accident or storm debris, which is why the same family of films is used in schools, shopfronts and public buildings.
Two situations it is built for
Residential ground floor
Back doors, patio glass and ground-floor windows are where homes are most exposed. Security film reinforces the glass you already have without bars, shutters or replacing the units — the look of the house does not change, but the easy entry point is gone.
Commercial front-of-shop
For retail, the risk is the smash-and-grab and the cost of a shattered shopfront. Security film turns a single blow into a sustained, obvious attack, and keeps a cracked window standing until it can be replaced rather than open to the street overnight.
Straight talk
What it does not do
Security film is reinforcement, not armour. It does not make glass bulletproof, and no honest installer will tell you it does. It buys time and holds the pane together — that is what deters and delays an intruder, and that is what it is for. If you need a rated attack-resistant specification, that is a glazing job, and we will say so.
Security film — your questions
Does security window film really stop break-ins?
It makes glass far harder and slower to get through, which is what deters most break-ins. A thick security film bonds the glass so that even when it cracks it holds together in the frame instead of shattering out, turning a quick smash into a noisy, time-consuming job.
How thick is security film?
Security films are much thicker than standard film — typically several times the thickness of a solar or privacy film. The exact micron rating for the film we fit is taken from its datasheet and quoted rather than estimated.
Is security film the same as bulletproof glass?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Security film reinforces existing glass against impact and forced entry; it does not make a window bullet-resistant. It buys time and holds fragments together, which is what deters and slows an intruder.
Can I combine security film with privacy film?
Yes. Security and privacy are different jobs, and some films combine reinforcement with a privacy or solar tint. Tell us what the window needs to do and we will specify a film — or a combination — that does it.
